People often say the world is a small place. They don’t always see the irony in this truth. They often don’t even have many real life experiences that exemplify the idea. I recently did though. It was a very interesting occurrence.
 
I found out that someone that is a friend of mine now went to school with my mother. Which means, she’s about the same age as my mom. This wasn’t really something that ever came up in my mind.  When I meet people, I never really think to put them into contexts like ages. I generally think about the places where I am or have been. That’s the kind of placings I create in my mind.
 
In reality, life and the world are created through networks of people and interactions. I went to school where my father went and where other family members went. My mother’s school when she was in high school was the rival to it. My friends went to summer camp with me, but a number of them never went to school at the same place. I met people from all walks of life and from many different countries.
 
I never really questioned it. The world is a small place, and growing even smaller as everyday passes. Why do I feel this way? For one thing, the internet is  allowing people to connect like they have never done before.  You don’t have to leave your house to learn about or meet those from other countries.
 
The world is a small place now. When we are young, we imagine that it is a huge and explorable place. The world seems like a mysterious and magical place. The older we get, and as more technology is developed it becomes smaller. There are billions of people, tons of places to go and thousands of places to see. We’re all on our own journeys. We each have our own desires and goals.
